Iran nuclear deal: Dead or alive

President Trump has always remained in the news for his strong views about almost everything. Earlier this week he said that he is going to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal. Iran nuclear deal has always been targeted by Trump as he believed that the deal was a disaster and had issues at its very core.

  • Iran Nuclear Deal

It was signed in 2015 in order to curb all the nuclear activity going on in Iran. It was agreeed that sanctions would be lifted off, which were imposed by the UN, US and EU for enrichment of Uranium by Iran. The Iran nuclear deal was signed when Barack Obama was in office but since President Trump took the office he has been targeting the deal. He said earlier this week that he is going to pull out of the deal and reimpose sanctions.

The Iran nuclear deal was agreed between Iran and 5 permanent members of the UN Security council (the US, UK, France, Russia and China) and Germany. Even though President Trump has decided to withdraw, the other signatories have decided to stay with the deal.

  • Iran’s Stance

According to reports Iran will try to salvage the deal provided the other signatories remain on board with the deal. Iran‘s President Hassan Rouhani said: “If we achieve the deal’s goals in co-operation with other members of the deal, it will remain in place.” But according to Country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran nuclear deal was bound to fail as America is not trustworthy. He also said that he is now skeptical and will need assurances from other signatories before continuing with the deal.

France has stated that the deal is not dead and they will have a meeting with UK and Germany to find a solution. Russia said it was disappointed by the decision to kill the deal, even China has the same opinion.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Israel “fully supports” Mr Trump’s withdrawal from a “disastrous” deal.

According to President Trump Iran nuclear deal is a disaster and he will find a real, comprehensive and lasting deal that will counter all the issues. The new deal will have sanctions not only on the nuclear program but also on the missile tests and Iran’s activities in the Middle east.

Due to US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, santions will be reimposed and will target all the industries mentioned in the deal including the oil sector and the aircraft industry.

US National Security Adviser John Bolton said that European companies doing business in Iran will have 6 months to cease all operations otherwise they will also face US sanctions.

Even though the deal wasn’t perfect and didn’t cover all the areas, but was working. The clauses that were not included in the deal according to President Trump were never supposed to be there. Killing the Iran nuclear deal has put US diplomacy in an unfavourable position with some of its closest allies.

After the Iran nuclear deal, nuclear activities were limited and would have taken atleast 12 months to gather enough enriched Uranium or plutonium to make a bomb if they wanted to do so.

According to reports it would still take years for Iran to acquire nuclear arsenal.

Apart from the sanctions by US, people fear that killing the Iran nuclear deal could cause a catastrophic regional war in the Middle east.
